Hi Mark,
in amongst the "works a bit" part, did you point and drag over the cube to
extract a spectrum? That's nice too, it's not all just the fast slicing.
You can also extract spectra averaged over regions. This should all work
for FITS cubes just the same as NDF ones.
Your CONVERT problems I don't understand. That message looks like it's
from COLLAPSE and there aren't many reasons it would fail to open that
cube (it does do some extra work if you've changed the coordinate system,
however). When you get a chance try just running COLLAPSE on it, with and
without CONVERT initialised and see what happens.

That's what "File->Open cube..." does. When its closed it's just
withdrawn, opening is fairly light-weight as the cube isn't reloaded.
