Here's what I know, or at least, here's what I think I know:
>> Suppose they'll mainly want to know what's in it, and what's not, and what
>> platforms are supported.
What's in it:
- the more common processing tools required by UKIRT and JCMT (i.e. GAIA,
KAPPA, FIGARO, POLPACK, CCDPACK, FLUXES, SPECX, SURF)
- the complete STARJAVA collection (I believe)
- ORAC-DR
What's not:
- things that have proprietary licences like MESSYS
Platforms:
- x86 Linux
- PPC OS X
- hopefully Solaris
> - what form it's going to be available in
Tarballs. Disk image for OS X. Frossie wanted to have a runnable CD, but
we just don't have the time or effort to figure out how to do that.
> - roughly how one will go about installing it
Basically untar it into a directory, then either create a softlink to
/star or actually put it in /star. I don't know if it's relocatable by
setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
> - how it will be advertised when it's available
No idea. That's in Frossie's head. :-)
> - what kind of support, if any, will be provided
> (e.g. you do/don't want to hear about bug reports)
Proper support can only be given to JAC users reducing JAC data. All
others will be supported at a best-efforts level. Bug reports are welcome,
patches even more so. User interactions are to be done via the
[log in to unmask] list.
> - what the prospects/uncertainties are for further releases,
> maintenance, development, support in the future
We'll probably do at least one more release, mostly for:
- PLASTIC updates
- CUPID updates
- SMURF official release (SCUBA-2 users will presumably want this)
The big pushes are going to be for JCMT users, which means cube
manipulation (mostly in the form of GAIA, I think), clump detection
(CUPID), and reduction of SCUBA-2 data (SMURF). The last one I'm not
entirely certain about, as I think SCUBA-2 is going to be treated
something like WFCAM, where data will ultimately be reduced by the CADC in
Victoria, and users get catalogues. But that's all in Tim's head. :-)
> - roughly how big an installation will be
Tarballs are on the order ~650MB, the /star install tree roughly 1.75GB
(450MB of which is WFCAM flats).
I'm not in the office on Monday (Labour Day), and I'm losing internet
access at home (we're moving house, and the cable company can't hook
it up until the 18th), so I'll be out of email contact until Tuesday, just
so you all know.
Cheers,
Brad.
