ELVIRE JOUVET 40
[via Benoit Jacquot]
Elvire must be . . . Effort that isn’t good--
lacks presence in revelation to the audience.
Very nicely
I had
religious ecstasy [Racine-like tone].
Excuse the expression.
Just now in order to immerse myself completely.
On the feeling
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
very nicely
end. We should feel how
that feeling is there from the beginning.

Written during my first viewing of Jacquot’s 65 minute b&w recreation of
the 1940 rehearsals by theatre director/actor Louis Jouvet of a crucial
scene from Moliere’s “Dom Juan”, in which the spurned lover Elvire
reappears to warn Dom Juan of impending danger. I had already been
exhausted by the non-stop wit of the first film shown on that day,
Jacquot’s “The False Servant”, and I was surprised that I was able to
concentrate at all during this intense, almost unbearable film--let alone
write in darker physical circumstances than usual. In fact, my rough draft
contains more examples than usual of superimposed handwriting and otherwise
indecipherable units of language.
