DAVID HARSENT
Author of nine collections of poetry and one selected poems, David Harsent
is one of the most celebrated writers in the UK. His latest book Legion
(Faber, 2005) is a remarkable exploration of conflict, incorporating
passages of great lyric intensity with reports from an unnamed warzone.
Legion was shortlisted for the TS Eliot and Whitbread Prizes and won the
Forward Prize for Best Collection. David is Distinguished Writing Fellow at
Sheffield Hallam University and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of
Literature in 2000. A long-term collaborator with composer Harrison
Birtwistle he is currently working with the Royal Opera House on a libretto
for The Minotaur.
‘ Harsent has an unusual claim to notice: you begin every poem with the
certain prospect of pleasure and surprise. ’ (Martin Amis, Observer)
NICK LAIRD
The release of To A Fault (Faber, 2005) marked the arrival of an urgent new
voice in British poetry. Born in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1975,
Nick Laird studied at Cambridge University and was awarded an Eric Gregory
in 2004. His sharp-edged, accomplished poems confront with equal poise the
divisions of a troubled homeland and the intimacies of lovers, never shying
from difficult choices. To A Fault was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for
Best First Collection. His first novel Utterly Monkey (Fourth Estate, 2005)
was shortlisted for a Commonwealth Writers Prize. Nick lives in London with
his wife, who is also a novelist.
‘ The most auspicious debut in Irish poetry since Paul Muldoon ’ (Colm
Tóibín)
