Forwarded by the Northern Ireland Museums Council on behalf of the
University of Ulster's Cultural Development Department.
Dear Colleagues
We invite you to attend our International Conference addressing the Creative
Industries: hosted by the University of Ulster's Cultural Development
Department (UUCD) & Northern Ireland Centre for European Co-operation
(NICEC). The conference title 'Creative Industries: Innovative Models for
Growing the Economy' will be held in the Europa Hotel, Belfast, on
Wednesday, September 27th, 2006.
The conference will bring together senior arts and creative industry experts
and practitioners from Europe and N. Ireland to allow for a unique exchange
of ideas. It is anticipated that the event will facilitate shared learning
that may influence the development of Northern Ireland's knowledge economy
and creative industries. Speakers will include leading European figures in
the creative industries; representatives of professional networks
representing the music, media, and design sectors, cultural development
agencies in Vienna and Helsinki, academic leaders and creative practitioners
presenting their experiences from Iceland, Finland, Austria and the UK.
We look forward to this event as a culmination of the work that UUCD and
NICEC have undertaken to highlight models of European practice in the
Creative industries. Please note that I have attached booking information, a
conference programme and a press release for your attention. Our conference
materials are available on our website see www.nicec.ulster.ac.uk
<http://www.nicec.ulster.ac.uk/> and will be updated regularly. I hope you
will join us for the event and I would appreciate it if you would forward
this information to your database of contacts in the Creative Industries,
and/or post this information on your website, as we are happy to accommodate
additional interest in the conference event.
The NICEC project actively works to create sustainable long-term
partnerships between relevant stakeholders in Northern Ireland and in
targeted EU states and regions; to promote applied policy learning in
Northern Ireland and in Europe; and to facilitate the building of
sustainable self-sufficient networks in recognition of the value of their
activities. To date, the NICEC cultural programme has engaged with over six
hundred persons from senior arts and cultural organisations attending at our
events including senior civil servants and permanent secretaries from DCAL
and DETI, directors of leading state agencies in arts, economic and social
development including Arts Council NI and INVEST NI, members of the
legislative assembly (MLA), experts, academics and established
practitioners. We have initiated innovative projects, developments and
initiatives that connect new learning, research and cultural development
with new forms of industry and the creative economy. One such initiative is
a sequence of study visits to EU centres of excellence in the creative
industries and has included visits to Austria, Iceland and Finland, as well
as best practice seminars hosted as part of the UK Creative Clusters
conference in Belfast in November 05.
The University's Cultural Development Department has a specific role to
provide a bridgehead between the University, the region and the wider world.
The current work that the University is undertaking to support the creative
industries in Northern Ireland is a strong indicator of the positive role
the University can play in the region's creative economy through
demonstrating and implementing models of good practice, carrying out applied
research and practical development projects such as 'Insight Out' and 'The
Midas Initiative'.
The NICEC project is based at the University of Ulster at Magee campus and
is funded by Peace II (Measure 4.1) through the Office of First Minister and
Deputy First Minister. The title of the project is "Shared Learning: From
the local to the global and back again". The aim of the project is to
develop new and build on existing networks addressing Cultural & Social
Regeneration and Diversity & Conflict Management themes that support
reciprocal learning between Northern Ireland and the EU, accession countries
and the Commonwealth of Independent States. All activities undertaken in the
course of the project will encourage the participation of politicians,
policy makers, practitioners, NGO's, professional analysts and academics
Our conference will begin at 9.30 am on Wednesday 27th September with
welcoming speeches and the keynote address. I have forwarded a provisional
press release and programme for the conference for your attention.
