Dear List,
Recent excavations in Combe Martin have revealed a walled mill pond. However, the wall has built-in buttresses (originally 3m high and not added as an afterthought) on the water-side of the wall. The outside of the wall is 'rammed' with clay/earth. The lower sediments of the pond contain early medieval and late Saxon pottery sherds.
Has anyone come across this type of structure where buttresses have been added internally?
Kindest regards,
Trevor
