medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear listmembers
I have a small article to write about death and burial practice across
Medieval Europe / Near East between 500 and 1500. I only have a 1000
words to cover everything, so broad brush is the order of the day!
Whilst I am confident about Western Christian traditions, (and reasonably
so in Jewish practice or pagan) I know a great deal less about Eastern
Orthodox and Muslim burial practices.
Does anyone know of any books / articles (preferably in English) about
these subjects. I know there are various websites about death and burial
issues, but the vast majority deal with modern practices. Alternatively
does anyone know any friendly organisations to whom I could put a few
questions.
An example of a specific question I have is:
Are grave goods (excluding a shroud) allowable in either. (I assume yes
in Eastern Orthodox and no in Muslim burials, but require a more
definitive and knowledgable statement to back up my assumption)
Any help gratefully received.
Chris Daniell
