To all Heads of German and Directors of Research in German
It has been brought to the attention of the CUTG that postgraduates
with an Austrian degree (particularly an MA) are potentially
disadvantaged when applying for AHRC funding, as the AHRC does not
seem to recognise their qualifications as appropriate preparation for
a PhD in this country. It appears that postgraduates with an Austrian
MA have applications turned down even when they have a proven research
record, including publications, in the field of their proposed PhD, on
the grounds that their first degree provides an unsatisfactory basis.
CUTG is now conducting a survey on this issue, with a view of taking
it up with the AHRC if necessary. Departments are asked to let the
President, Prof. Martina Lauster ([log in to unmask]), know if
they have experienced any rejections of applications by the AHRC as
outlined above.
