A few points.....
The term 'Cretin' literally means 'poor Christian'.
The condition known as 'Cretinism' mainly occurs in areas of the world that consume glacial water, flat areas that used to be occupied by the last ice age, have the same problem. If untreated Cretinism can lead to water on the brain. which in turn frequently leads to brain injury that often causes a learning impairment. An effective treatment was discovered in 1892, Cretin survivors need only take a small iodine tablet every a day.
The first Cretin to take a university degree was in 1908. These days all table salt sold in the UK contains Iodine. Iodine unlike some additives, is quite harmless.
The term 'Cretin' still survives as a term of abuse which is mainly used by ignorant ex-public school boys who have either been to Oxford or Cambridge universities.
To their credit, there are a number of Cretins currently studying in London universities and collages, however, they have to keep quite about it, because of ignorance and disability discrimination,
Keith
Note for non-UK readers:
It is ironic to note that in the UK 'public schools' are NOT for children of the general public, there are for the children of the elite super rich.
