Leonardo: Behind the Picture
7 Oct, 10.30-16.30
Victoria and Albert Museum, Lecture Theatre
This study day coincides with the V&A's new exhibition Leonardo da Vinci:
Experience, Experiment and Design. Looking at his art and beyond, into one
of the most inventive minds in history, we will ask how science has helped
us learn about Leonardo's art and how Leonardo's art has helped inform
science. Pre-eminent art historians and scientists will explore different
aspects of Leonardo's work * his use of colour, his drawing technique, his
fascination with the human heart, and perhaps his most iconic legacy, The
Last Supper.
Civilisation and Enlightenment: The Arts of Meiji Japan
11 Nov, 10.30*16.30
Victoria and Albert Museum, Lecture Theatre
In recent years, world-wide interest in the arts of the Meiji period has
significantly increased, not least in Japan itself where the arts of this
era are now beginning to receive the academic and public acclaim that many
feel they have long deserved. To coincide with a new display of the V&A's
rich collections of Meiji works the V&A has invited speakers who are at the
forefront of studies in this area to talk about objects produced and
collected at a time when Japan and the West contributed cross-culturally to
the applied and decorative arts, often to astonishing effect. Cost. £38.
Concessions apply. Call 0207 942 2211 or email [log in to unmask] to
book. Visit www.vam.ac.uk for more details.
