Resource Description and Access - creating metadata content
Special Session - Wednesday 4 October, 16.30-18.30, DC-2006, Colima
There is more to creating useful metadata than URIs, schemas and syntax.
Rules for creating the *content* of metadata descriptions have an
important role to play in ensuring consistency and interoperability.
Content-level agreements exist within specific communities but
interpretation of the content can become problematic when data is moved
between domains. "Resource Description and Access" (RDA) is a new
content standard for resource description being developed on the
foundations of well established library cataloguing practice.
A comment period is being managed by the Joint Steering Committee of RDA
and consultations are being undertaken with other communities in an
effort to attain an effective level of alignment between RDA and the
metadata standards used in those other communities. This session seeks
to provide feedback to the developers of RDA. There will be a
presentation of the issues from Diane Hillmann from a Library
perspective and comments from Mikael Nilsson from the perspective of the
Joint DCMI/IEEE LOM Taskforce followed by discussion. Views from other
communities are welcomed.
