Call for Papers Asoociation of American Geographers April 17-21 2007 San
Francicso
Session: Neoliberalism in the Global South
Organizers: Mona Atia (University of Washington) and Stephen Young
(University of Washington)
Discussant: Ananya Roy (University of California at Berkeley)
Geographers are increasingly concerned with the complex layering of
economic and political transformations as a result of neoliberal
regimes. Less attention however has been paid to the particularities of
these changes in the context of the Global South. Media representations
of economic 'rising stars' and recalcitrant 'rogue states' coupled with
influential discourses on the impact of globalization have dominated
popular discussions of neoliberal change in the Global South. This
session seeks papers that challenge this imbalance by providing situated
accounts of how neoliberalism - as policy, ideology and governmentality
- is reshaping relations of wealth and poverty, inclusion and exclusion,
in countries of the Global South and how people are resisting or
navigating such processes.'
If there is enough interest we would like to have an accompanying panel
discussion on this theme, however the above call is for an organized
paper session. To express interest, please send a title and abstract as
soon as possible and your PIN number by October 13th to
