Hi all,
Here's a question for advanced interpreters of the IEEE LOM and IMS Best
Practice Guidelines, for Friday afternoon. No prize offered I'm afraid,
but opinions welcome.
We have decided to extend the LOM for an image collection within a wider
LO repository. We are extending it using elements from z39.87 which is
a NISO standard for technical metadata for describing images. Most of
the elements fit nicely within the LOM technical section.
However, there are the elements ImageProducer and DateTimeCreated which
are sub-elements of the ImageCreation element.
Clearly these would most naturally fit within the LOM 2. LifeCycle
contributor and contribution date elements.
However, ImageProducer is very specifically defined as the
"organisation-level producer of the image". Clearly this is important
to image collections as it is still appearing like this in the newly
approved standard.
So options are to leave ImageProducer in the z39.87 sub-elements, as it
is specific to images, or to use the LOM contributor role and
contributor entity elements with a new vocabulary defined for
contributor role with the value "ImageProducer".. however while the
first seems most pragmatic, the second seems to conform more to the
guidelines about not creating new elements where one exists in the LOM.
Whaddaya reckon?
S.
