Dear BACS Subscribers,
I am hoping to convene a panel for the next International Convention of
Asian Scholars (ICAS) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2-5 August 2007. The
broad sub-theme in which the panel will fall under will be Society and
Identity. However, I wish to organise the panel session to focus on
China’s state-society relationship in the era of socioeconomic transition.
The session will aim to understand how state-society relationship has
evolved since China implemented its economic liberalisation policies since
1978 and what the shape of this relationship may be in the future.
Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:
- The development of Chinese civil society
- State power and social forces
- Public sphere
- Society’s relationship with various levels of government eg. Central,
provincial, municipal etc.
- State coporatism/state-led society
- Responses from various sectors of society to changing nature of the state
