Orsay, 10 September 2006
Dear colleague:
We anticipate to recruit a junior faculty member (at the rank of Maître de
conférences, which corresponds roughly to a British Lecturer position) for
the Cosmology Group of the Laboratoire de Physique Théorique (LPT) at the
Orsay campus of the Université Paris-Sud (Paris XI). We kindly ask you to
bring to our attention the names of suitable candidates for this post and
also request that you forward this message to them.
This post, pending formal approval from the Ministry of Education, has been
attributed to our group by the Université Paris-Sud in order to strengthen
our participation in the scientific exploitation of the forthcoming data
from the PLANCK space mission. The data of the CMB temperature and
polarization anisotropies will start to become available in 2008. Our group
presently consists of four permanent members, Martin Bucher, Christos
Charmousis, Yann Mambrini and Renaud Parentani, a postdoc (Bartjan Van
Tent), and several graduate students. We maintain close relations with the
PLANCK groups at the IAS (Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale), the LAL
(Laboratoire de l'Accélérateur Linéaire) and the IAP (Institut
d'Astrophysique de Paris) as well as with the members of the high-energy
theory group in our laboratory. We seek a theorist having an expertise in
the physics of the Early Universe and who is able to apply this expertise
to the interpretation of the forthcoming PLANCK data. The candidate
recruited will take part in the preparation for PLANCK and the
interpretation of the data in collaboration with Martin Bucher and the
other members of the PLANCK team at Orsay and in Paris. The research
interests of the candidate should likewise include the development of new
models for the early universe and in particular with a view toward
establishing connections with ideas about new physics at the highest energy
scales. Please note that this job profile should be interpreted broadly.
The candidate will be expected to be able to teach physics at all levels of
the university curriculum in French.
A few details about the timeline and procedure: The position will be
formally announced toward the beginning of February 2007 by publication in
the Journal Officiel, and the call for applications will close toward the
end of March, with auditions and final decisions taking place in April or
May. HOWEVER, TO BE ABLE TO APPLY, APPLICANTS MUST have passed the
"qualification aux fonctions de Maître de conférences" in France. For those
not already having passed the qualification, the deadline for applying is
16 OCTOBER 2006. More information may be obtained on the Ministry of
Education website at:
http://www.education.gouv.fr/personnel/enseignant_superieur/enseignant_chercheur/default.htm
If necessary, we are available to assist with the preparation of the dossier
for the qualification.
Details of the formal application procedure will be made available at a
later date on the website of the University. We however request potential
candidates to contact us beforehand so that we can invite them to our lab
during the course of the 2006-2007 academic year. We also request
interested candidates to send a cover letter, CV, description of research
and teaching experience, list of publications and to have at least three
letters of recommendation sent to
