This interdisciplinary conference brings together new research that
explores questions of knowledge, belief, ethos and religion. Focusing on
theoretically informed cultural and historical analyses of religion,
society and space, the conference acts as a forum for the presentation of
new or revised theoretical approaches and methodologies. Recent research
into religious faith and practice has focused on the complex interactions
of the political and poetic dimensions of sacredness in contemporary
societies. Taking this research agenda forward, this conference explores
how religious and secular beliefs inform and construct social identities,
public knowledge and modes of governance. In particular, there is an
urgent need for a critical understanding of how terms such as 'religion',
'faith', 'fundamentalism' and 'secularism', for example, inform public
debates and foster constructive engagements with faith groups.
