WORKING GROUP: DC Kernel Working Group Report
DATE: 10 September 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Activities and results since Madrid conference

While there has been little traffic on the discussion list, related
documentation progressed with the publication of an Internet-Draft that
utilizes DC Kernel metadata, namely, THUMP (The HTTP URL Mapping Protocol)
[ http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-kunze-thump-01.txt ] authored
by three WG members. This draft defines a simple protocol that requires
simple metadata.

Off-line WG activity was seen at the JCDL Workshop on Metadata Tools for
Digital Resource Repositories held 15 June 2006 and organized by working
group member Jane Greenberg. Three other workshop participants were also
Kernel WG members, including invited speakers Kevin Gamiel and John Kunze.
Their talks described THUMP and ERC/Kernel metadata in context of large
scientific computing applications and trends toward simpler syntaxes
(e.g., RSS, microformats). A number of attendees posed questions that
indicated prior experience with Kernel metadata and an interest in
future results.

A first draft has been made of the Kernel Application Profile (KAP)
That document specifies Kernel elements and requirements, and compares
the core DC semantics and DCMI Abstract Model with Kernel metadata.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Open issues

Documentation has progressed, but more feedback is required to understand
the common issues. The need for an XML representation of kernel metadata
has resurfaced, if only for its ubiquity as an export/import format.
Limited discussion with developers of the Grid-based information retrieval
package, Sarcomere, has turned up potential new requirements, but these
need to be discussed more widely in the working group.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Plans and priorities for 2006-2007

A face-to-face Kernel WG meeting at DC 2006. This meeting will focus on
how to transform the clear interest among WG members into more active
participation on the workplan. A co-chair will be sought to help keep
discussion moving. Implementation of Kernel metadata is expected to
increase, especially in light of its use with ARK identifiers, for which
new registrants include Google Book Search. It appears to be useful
to document a comprehensive list of ERC "story" types, as requested at
the JCDL workshop of June 2006.
