Dear All
The message below was posted to the GRIDPP-SC mail list which is used
for all service challenge related mails. TB-SUPPORT is a much more
general list with a wider audience. This mail is to check that all
GRIDPP site sysadmins are registered on the SC list. If you think you
would benefit from following preparation discussions on the SC list but
are not currently registered, please visit www.jiscmail.ac.uk to
subscribe.
Many thanks,
Jeremy

Subject: [GRIDPP-SC] New Data Management Milestones
Hi,
For those that are not already aware, Graeme Stewart has moved to being
Scotgrid Coordinator and I am covering the Data Management post in the
interim period until a permanent replacement is hired.
So to celebrate my new role, I have written some milestones for the
inter-tier-2 FTS transfer rates. The magic figure is 250Mb/sec sustained
(seperately for inbound and outbound traffic) for 24 hours before the
end
of September.
The milestones are stated at
http://www.gridpp.ac.uk/wiki/Tier_2_SC4_Milestones#Tier-2_Transfers_.28E
nd_of_Summer_2006.29
We have found several reference sites, by this I mean sites with proven
read/write rates (hopefully 300Mb/sec in and out) which can act as a
source/sink during these tests. Edinburgh, Birmingham and RAL PPD fit
the
bill and Greig, Yves and Chris respetively have agreed that these sites
shall be reference sites during the tests.
I am hoping to get as many of the sysadmins as possible involved in
this.
So the plan is for tha sysadmins from the non-reference sites to be
submitting the actual FTS transfers during the tests, done through the
fileTransfer.py script written by Graeme Stewart and further developed
by
myself.
It shall only take submitting one command per 24hr run, however there
may
be local issues arising as a result of these tests. I shall inform
everyone of SURLS/endpoints closer to the end of the month. If anyone
has a
particular issue about submitting the filetransfers themselves then I
can
do it for them.
Remember, that it is courtesy to let your network people know that you
are
planning to put a large sustained load on the system.
The tests shall be (for the non-reference sites) first inbound for 24hrs
then outbound for 24hrs, thus eating into 10-12 days for the reference
sites and 2 days for each non-reference site. The pairing shall be
similar
to that below. The dates are provisional and many of them shall
inevitably
change as we get closer to the testing dates. Obviously experiment tests
take priority, so that could cause dates to shift. This is a two way
process so issues arising at the reference sites could also cause dates
to
shift.
If there are any problems with the dates then please email me and I
shall
reschedule your site tests to an alternative date, but bear in mind that
we're trying to achieve these milestones before 30th Sept.
