The day will begin at 09.30 with tea/coffee, and will include the following speakers from 10.00:
Philip Weller (University of Nottingham), 'Ways of the New: Zemlinsky (& Dukas) in the light of history'
Jane Manning (Kingston University), 'When is a lied not a lied?: neglected gems of 20th-century vocal repertoire.' Accompanied by Terence Allbright, Jane will also perform Zemlinsky's Six Maeterlinck Songs, Op. 13 (1910-13).
Shoko Hino (University of Missouri), 'Innovator or Imitator? Examining Zemlinsky's Eclectic Voice in Fantasies on a Poem by Richard Dehmel, Op. 9'
Peter Fribbins (Middlesex University) will discuss Zemlinsky's string quartets, and his Cello Sonata will partner Zemlinsky's during the evening concert.
Pamela Tancsik (University of KwaZulu-Natal) 'Zemlinsky's impact on contemporary opera during his stay in Prague between 1911 and 1927.'
Steven Vande Moortele (University of Leuven), 'Zemlinsky's Second String Quartet & the Tradition of Two-Dimensional Sonata Form'
Raymond Coffer (Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, University of London), 'Betwixt the Hof- and the Volksoper - a portrait of Zemlinsky in Gmunden, 1908'
Christopher Dromey (Middlesex University), 'Unbreaking the mould: Schoenberg's stifling of Zemlinsky'
Antony Beaumont, Keynote Address by the author of Zemlinsky (Faber, 2000), will discuss his editing of Zemlinsky's works, including the preparation of accurate performing materials for Der Traumgörge and the Cello Sonata.
At 18.30, following the conference, Raphael Wallfisch and John York will give a recital that includes cello sonatas by Korngold, Fribbins and Zemlinsky (UK Premiere).
