Down Your Way - Bringing Local History to Life
Programme for the day
10am - 11am Approaches to Local History
Using a range of materials from LMA, including maps, images and documents, this introductory session shows ways in which the rich history of a local area can be brought to life.
11am - 11.15am Coffee
11.15am - 12.15pm Trouble in Turnmill Street
In Shakespeare's time Turnmill Street was the wildest, bawdiest street in London. Dr Gillian Spraggs explores the colourful history of Elizabethan and Jacobean Clerkenwell as revealed in the Middlesex Sessions records and other documents at LMA.
12.15pm - 1.30pm Lunch
1.30pm - 2.30pm John Wesley and the City Road
John Wesley's chapel on City Road has been a local landmark since 1778. Wesley's house also stands here, built in 1779. The site is a powerful reminder of the social, religious and political changes of the time which still affect us today.
2.30pm - 3.30pm Exploring the Visible Past - A Guided Walk
Discover local history through the evidence of buildings, open spaces and street names.
3.30pm - 3.45pm Tea
3.45pm - 4.15pm St Luke's Local History Group
St Luke's Local History Group has been exploring more recent local history through personal memories and experience. The group will share some of their discoveries.
