Optimisation problem-solving: Cognitive processes in solving Vehicle
Routing Problems
Three-year full time PhD Studentship (fees plus full RCUK stipend
available to UK candidates from October 2006)
The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is an example of a class of realistic
NP-complete problems (i.e., computational optimisation problems for
which no known mechanisms exist for guaranteeing solution of large-scale
problems). The problem requires the discovery of an optimal set of
tours around a group of nodes under a set of constraints. Consider, for
example, a water company that must make emergency deliveries during a
drought - it has tankers that can hold a limited load of water, and many
villages that it must supply in as short a time/distance as possible.
Pilot data indicate that naive human solutions to variants of this
problem provide solutions that compete with powerful computational
algorithms. The project will explore the range of human competencies at
solving VRPs, in order to extract contributions to a new class of
computational mechanism for embodying within machine-based solution
mechanisms.
We are seeking a graduate with at least a 2i (hons) in Psychology,
Operations Research or Computer Science (other relevant disciplines will
be considered) to conduct empirical studies of human performance and
potentially undertake computational modelling of VRP solutions.
Applicants should complete a Lancaster University application form,
available at
http://www.lancs.ac.uk/users/admissions/postgrad/pgform1.htm, and
include a CV with their application. Closing date for applications is
September 4th 2006.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Tom Ormerod, HoD and Professor
