All good sense, and of course has been raised before in the recent past.
What David says is fundamental to the future of Cilip:-
Who are your members
Who are not
Who could/should be
Why aren't some people members
What can we do to encourage membership
And then
How do we do all this, what is the business model which can market our
(Cilip's) services and add value and a surplus to spend on member
services?

Subject: Re: Cilip: business model & future
It is obvious that the future of any membership organisation depends
upon
recruitment. Any organisation losing members needs to identify which
members it is losing and why. This is one of the many tasks
confronting
CILIP.
I would guess from anecdotal information that CILIP is losing members
aged
55 and over, and that it is failing to recruit new graduates. I would
guess that it is losing the first group because they are unlikely to be
promoted and do not see what value they gain from being a member of the
organisation, other than the Vacancies Supplement, and the need to be in
membership to be considered for most professional posts.
I suspect that the second group, emerging from university with large
debts and having difficulty in finding professional posts, do not join.
Of course, I have no real evidence for these suppositions.
It does however seem to me that the first step in the business model for
CILIP is to identify why it is losing and/or failing to attract members.
CILIP may wish to consider a lapsed member survey, and a survey of
library school graduates who have not yet joined the organisation.
Regards
David Kenvyn,
