I don't think you're being thick at all Sarah! I too cannot see any threads. Is this because I did not express an interest in being involved in the pilot? If this is the case, I feel it's a great shame that those who for whatever reason didn't pick up on the original information are unable to join in.
Can anyone shed any light?

It was a bit of a mission, but after a few abortive attempts at
searching the CILIP website, I scrolled to the bottom of Bruce's email
and found the instructions there (doh!). For those of you who, like me,
never stop to read the instructions, you can get to the online forum at:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk.
Cheers,
Vicky

Excellent idea. In fact the announcement of this must have flown under
my radar, so I was actually interested in giving this a try.
So I went to the CILIP homepage. Logged in. And looked for the online
community pilot. There is no link on the homepage, there were no hits
on the search until I limited the search to the word communities and got
a link to a page showing an open letter inviting us all to use the
communities. On this page there is no link to the communities pilot.
This is despite the letter exhorting us to give it a try.
Now it is incredibly feasible that I have misread, misunderstood or not
looked hard enough but surely, surely as we are information
professionals our website should be a very good website and even a
numbskull like me should be able to get a meaningful hit using the
search function.
In the end I went and used Google ('CILIP Communities') and I found what
might be the Community Pilot site. But I wasn't sure if it definitely
was so I'm not sure whether to use it.
I found this: http://cilipwebeditforum.org.uk/ does anyone know if it's
legitimate? There's no attribution pages (Terms and Conditions;
copyright...etc)
The annoying thing is that I actually want to use this forum, I believe
that we should get involved, but I agree with Jenny that CILIP needs to
make it easier to get involved.
Regards to all

Folks
I note that the pilot of CILIP Communities has kicked off. Hope folks
will give it a try. The initial theme, "Demonstrating your value to your
organisation", is quite similar to some of the discussions on this list,
so perhaps some of you would care to re-post to the Forum
Best
Bruce

Dear Colleague,
We are very proud and excited to announce the formal opening of our new
online communities pilot. As with the invitation email, you can dive
straight in by following the instructions below or you can read more
about
it further down this email.
When you get to the communities, you will find some conversations
already
taking place around our pilot topic "Demonstrating your value to your
organisation". We have started some 'threads' so that it is not a large
empty space when you join in (analogies with seemingly cavernous
school
halls and shrinking violets - does anyone remember the beginning of the
school disco?). You are welcome to read these and get involved, or start
your own about an angle that you are particularly keen on - that is
what
the Communities are there for.
Ultimately (after Members' Day) we will open this up so that
conversations
can take place on any topic that members are interested in, but for now
we
are limiting ourselves to one topic with the potential for discussion on
a
number of aspects.
We hope you like what you see and kindly request that you bear with us -
this is a pilot phase and we will be learning together how to ensure a
fun,
safe environment for everyone to meet. This way we can together ensure
that the launch in October is structurally sound and sustainable.
**********
If you want to join the pilot community, here is what to do:
1. Go to this URL:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk
2. Login with your normal CILIP web username and password
(Go to www.cilip.org.uk/passwordreminder.htm if you need a reminder of
your
login details)
3. Introduce yourself here:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk/forums/thread/55.aspx
4. If you are a little confused, go to this 'New arrivals' help thread.
It
is a good starting point and leads you to a downloadable walkthrough of
the
communities. If you have 'new arrival' questions, post them here and we
can
point you in the right direction:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk/forums/thread/151.aspx
5. If you want to simply try stuff out and fiddle with the technology
without interrupting any conversations, proceed to the 'sandbox' - we
have
set this up specifically for that reason:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk/forums/16/ShowForum.aspx
6. If you want to dive straight into the 'Value' discussions, proceed
directly to the forum here:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk/forums/5/ShowForum.aspx
If you want more information on the pilot, read below:
**********
1. Topic description: "Demonstrating value to your organisation":
http://communities.cilip.org.uk/forums/5/ShowForum.aspx
As you know from our last email, the topic comes directly from members'
requests. This will be the main theme of our conversations and provides
us
with some thematic boundaries within which to stay. An important behind
the
scenes element of the pilot is a qualitative analysis of the type of
knowledge shared around the topic, so off-topic conversations will make
it
much harder to create useful analysis which will affect the long-term
success of the pilot: please try to stay on topic and be patient with us
as
we take action to ensure this.
After the pilot, we will invite members to open up their own communities
on
any number of new subjects..
Consider and discuss how you demonstrate your value to your
organisation.
How is value articulated and communicated? How can you evaluate the
impact
of services? What is the business case for providing a
library/information
service within an organisation, or for a defined set of users? How can
we
ensure that the benefits of employing a professional are understood and
appreciated by the decision-makers. And how exactly can we ensure that
when
change is in the air, and hard decisions have to be made, 'cutting the
library' is NOT the immediate and easy response that comes to mind?
2. Introduce yourself and fill in your profile:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk/forums/thread/55.aspx
Please let us know who you are and where your interests lie. This is
always
a very popular part of online communities and a valuable part of the
networking we get to find out about each other. You can do this by
adding a
post to the "Introduce yourself" thread.
Please also take a few moments to fill out your profile; you do this by
clicking on your name once you are logged in and filling in some
information
about yourself.
3. The support centre:
http://communities.cilip.org.uk/forums/17/ShowForum.aspx
The support centre is to provide you with help and advice about using
the
communities software, including a 'New arrivals walkthrough'
presentation.
It is also there to hold the conversations we will have about the social
structures of the communities (processes, community rules etc.) - you
may
remember that co-creating the 'standard operating procedures' of the
communities is a vital part of the pilot; we will be holding those
conversations in this area so we can keep the 'Value' conversations on
topic. Please note that we will move off-topic conversations to the
right
place - as written above - please bear with us - we are all learning!
4. Files for downloading:
Support forum: http://communities.cilip.org.uk/files/8/default.aspx
Value forum: http://communities.cilip.org.uk/files/6/default.aspx
Members are welcome to upload and download files they consider useful
and
relevant as part of the conversations - these files will be held in
these
sections. As you might expect, the Value files are all documents related
to
the pilot topic. There is already some great information in there - have
a
look.
The Support files are, unsurprisingly, about how to use the forums (e.g.
starting a thread) and the proposed processes (for later discussion once
we
are settled in).
5. Ways to stay up to date with the conversations:
You do not have to visit the communities every time you wish to keep up
to
date with the conversations. You can set the forums up to send you
emails of
the latest comments in conversations you are tracking, or follow them
with
the RSS feeds delivered to your RSS reader software. We will be
synthesising
the highlights on the community blogs (one about the Value discussions
and
one about the ongoing processes); these are also available via RSS. As
well
as this we will send a monthly email to everyone who has agreed to be
part
of the pilot to keep them up to date - we will be asking for your
feedback
on all these channels later in the pilot.
Enough from us - let's get down to it and start some conversations and
explore the issues, facts, opinions and knowledge we hold between us
about
how we demonstrate our value to our organisations.
Best wishes,
CILIP Communities team
