Yeah, managed to get this slightly (!!) wrong. Should have checked the OED
(and my thanks to Peter).
There +is+ an entry (as the OED notes) in Farmer&Henley (slightly
differently spelled, but that's no excuse). The OED also cites Partridge
[again, I missed the example you give], but Dictionary/Underworld. My
excuse here is that it's in the 3rd ed (1968 -- probably as a supplement --
see the page numbering in the OED below -- 1950 ends at page 804), but not
in the 1st (1950) which is what I have. At the moment -- just thrown $15 at
abebooks to rectify this deficiency in my library.
So altogether, it's commoner than I thought.
