Research Fellow (fixed term), RA1A
in the Software Systems Group
Department of Informatics
University of Sussex
Salary: up to 23182 GBP pa (subject to pay scale review)
Fixed term for 3 years from 1st October 2006
We are seeking a post-doctoral Research Fellow for an EPSRC WINES
programme project, "Pervasive Computing Support for Market Trading",
with partners at Southampton University, University College London and
Kings College London. In this project we will be investigating how to
support physically located auctions and markets so as to allow remote
participation, and further, how to allow auctions to be conducted in
an ad-hoc fashion, such as at car boot sales. Our approach will be
through the use of social investigation to determine how best to
support existing auctions, and then the construction of a firm
theoretical foundation on which to engineer the software systems to
support the auctions. The project will be evaluated through the use of
the developed technology in real situated auctions.
Sussex will be undertaking work on providing technologies
for this investigation that support existing social practises and
provide novel opportunities for interaction. By utilising the
research developments within the other parts of the project (theory,
middleware, sociological investigation) we will provide prototype
systems to support activities within the market place such as item
search, bidding, tracking interesting objects, understanding the
context of interactions, and building and understanding trust between
the participants. Solutions are likely to involve the use of location
sensing technology, smart tags, public displays, portable devices and
media representations. The applicant will be responsible for
developing these solutions for use in the project.
The position will be filled by a post-doctoral researcher who must
have completed their PhD in a relevant area of computer science. The
successful candidate will:
* be able to manipulate and build hardware based on systems such as
Motes or Particles;
* be able to design, implement and integrate software to allow such
systems to run;
* have an awareness of one of the following research areas: pervasive
computing, networks, trusted computing theory;
* have a proven ability to write publishable research papers.
In the first year the position will be split between two projects: the
one described above, and another (also EPSRC) investigating "Third
Party Resource Usage for Pervasive Computing". This requires
similar skills in building software systems which consider trust,
reputation and control policies.
The postion will require frequent interaction with project personnel
at Sussex and the other partner sites, and some field-work to support
investigations and trials of the developed system. The position will
also include light teaching support duties.
