Here's a useful reference published by the U. S. Geological Survey:
Rabbitt, Mary C., 1979, "Minerals, lands, and geology for the common defence and general welfare, Vol. 1, before 1879": USGS, 331 p.
Don't be put off by the long ponderous title. This publication contains much interesting information (and illustrations) on early mining and prospecting in the United States. I don't have current price or availability info, but it should be possible to track it down on the internet. Try www.abebooks.com for used copies, and probably a lot easier than trying to wallow through the federal maze.

Another book to check is Charles K. Hyde, Copper for America (U. of Arizona
Press, 1998). The first chapter deals with the colonial period and there are
extensive footnotes.
