I haven't really been following this thread so you may be wanting
non-coal however ----
There is a picture by Thomas Hair of a water powered pump at Beamish
Colliery circa 1840.
Also, in the papers of the NEIMME* there is a sketch of a system in
which a steam engine pumped water from one level to a higher level. This
water then fed a water wheel which pumped water from a lower seam which
would have been below the depth possible for the steam engine.
The title is "A plan of a bob-gin and a steam engine" which was "Taken
the 2nd day of Feb 1733/4".
I can send a copy of the scan of an old photocopy if you wish.
The ref was NEIMME Forster/1 vol 4 (the archives were transfered to the
Northumberland RO a long while ago so the ref may have changed)
Hazel Fleming.
