Dear List,
I know its a bit short-notice, but I would like to remind anyone in the South-West England area who is interested, that I will be directing archaeological excavations at Morwellham Quay near Tavistock in West Devon, over National Archaeology Week (15th-24th July). Anyone who fancies doing some practical industrial archaeology is welcome to come along. Bring stout boots and clothing. We will be working from 9am to 5pm every day.
We will be excavating trial trenches to investigate the tunnel portal at the foot of the Devon Great Consols inclined plane. This was a standard gauge mineral railway, opened in 1859 and closed in 1903. Our discoveries will inform a proposed reconstruction of the portal and railways.
Hope to see you there!
Robert Waterhouse, Morwellham Quay Archaeologist
