medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In Christopher de Hamel's _Medieval Craftsmen: Scribes and Illuminators_
(London: British Museum Press, 1992) there are two illuminations (one on
the front cover, by the man himself, the other plate 28) of Jean Mielot
(d. 1472), scribe and translator to the Dukes of Burgundy, working at a
two-level desk: both show a table with a wooden writing-desk propped on
top of it, triangular in cross-section, and a second, smaller
writing-desk above and behind it (presumably to carry an exemplar),
apparently attached to the larger desk by two separate lengths of metal
pipe (one curved in Mielot's illustration, both in plate 28) connected
by a joint in the middle (to allow the smaller desk to swivel?).
