I did contribute to the earlier debate but as yet have not contributed
but now feel compelled to do so and have several points to make:
1. I have been a member of Cilip, and the LA before that, for 30
years and in all that time have never been personally approached by
any member of the Council. In fact I feel that if there is any
communication then it is by the ordinary member trying to get hold of
a council member.
2. If every member of Cilip who didn't like something actually got
involved then there would be too many chiefs and not enough Indians.
3. The main advantage of the mailing list is that of time. If you
work in a busy environment where time is of a premium, like I
do, then you do not have the time to log into a website to
participate in a Communities of Practice. This is something that
none of these people who are against the list seems to grasp.
4. If the Cilip council wants to attract new members then they
should be encouraging them and not trying to discourage them.
5. Anyway if they don't own the list then there is nothing that
they can do.
6. One final point is that they really ought to actively seek the
views of the whole membership regardless of the sector they work in in
order to increase the membership. All the time that I have been a
member I have always thought that the leadership were to
complacent.

Subject: Re: [LIS-CILIP] Closure of this list
I am the councillor representing the Community Services Group of CILIP
and was at council when the discussion and vote took place. I had no
favoured view on whether the list should be closed or not prior to the
discussion. Having listened to both sides of the argument and been
given assurances that the communities of practice would provide a
suitable platform for communication I voted to close the list.
Quite often Council votes against something I and CSG members/committee
are in favour of, such as the restructuring of special interest groups
but we have to accept that Council works as a democracy. The majority
view wins - not always the right choice but I have to accept it!
Having been on Council for a couple of years I can assure you that CILIP
staff work extremely hard to make the organisation work and to
communicate with members. Sometimes it gets it wrong - who doesn't make
mistakes? CILIP is a member organisation and if members don't like
something they should get involved and help to change it.
It is interesting that the closure of this list has caused such a furore
- let's hope members take an equal interest and make a stand on other
important issues - like the future of CILIP.

And comments made of a personal nature on the list by a member of
council not so long ago! So no hypocrisy please.
I wonder what % of council do use the list?

I agree with Diana. If someone stands as, and is voted in as, a
Councillor, they have to accept the rough with the smooth. "Dummies" and
"gullible" is moderate compared to remarks made publicly about John
Prescott, but he seems big enough to cope with the criticisms.
