Workshop Announcement
Date: Saturday November 4 2006 (11 am to 5 pm)
Venue: The Goethe Institute, London
Organisers: The Association of Modern German Studies and The Goethe Institute, London
'Die Welt zu Gast bei Freunden:
Deutschland im WM-Fieber'
The aim of the workshop is to provide teachers and lecturers with strategies and materials for developing the writing skills of A/AS Level students and first-year undergraduates.
There will be a theoretical introduction on the development of writing skills followed by workshops at two different levels, which will use primary material from the whole range of the press, and modern media such as pod-casting, to address some of the following issues:
- How Germany sought to present itself at the 2006 World Cup
- Foreigner visitors' reactions to Germany
- German patriotism and nationalism: Feier, Auszeit oder Wendepunkt?
- Sport and national identity
By the end of the session, teachers will have enough material and ideas
for several weeks class-room teaching and projects.
The workshops will be led by:
Chris Young and Silke Mentchen (University of Cambridge),
Markus Hesselmann (Redakteur Ressort Sport, Der Tagesspiegel, Berlin),
Ruth Ciesinger (Ressort Politik, Der Tagesspiegel)
