Dear Colleague,
It is just 7 weeks to go until the Institute of Psychiatry's third annual
International Mental Health conference.
30th August - 1st September 2006
FRANKLIN WILKINS BUILDING, KING'S COLLEGE LONDON, WATERLOO CAMPUS
http://www.iop.kcl.ac.uk/international/conference
The theme this year is People on the Move
- Complex Emergencies - people displaced through war or natural disasters
What are the short-term and medium to long-term consequences of displacement?
What have we learnt from recent experiences?
- Urbanisation in developing countries
- Compulsory resettlement
- Asylum seekers and refugees (migration post-conflict and trauma)
- Trafficked women
What is the impact of rural to urban migration and of international
migration upon mental health?
What are the mental health needs of migrants to cities and to richer
countries? Are these being met?
- Can greater mental health awareness improve policymaking and inform
service development
For managing migration (migrants, host communities, those left behind)
For managing complex emergencies
For post-emergency and post-conflict reconstruction and resettlement
Speakers from
Organisations: UNHCR, International Organisation for Migration, WHO,
Medecins sans Frontieres, Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of
Torture
Countries: Nigeria, Ghana, Malawi, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Africa, Thailand,
Cambodia, China, India , Pakistan, China, Israel, Iraq, Iran, Russia, Ukraine
A primary aim for our conference is to promote networking, exchange of
ideas and experiences, and generally to increase awareness of the salience
of mental health to global health and human development - with a unique
coming together of researchers, practitioners and policymakers from all
sectors (academics, the health sector, national and international NGOs,
governmental and intergovernmental agencies) this year's conference looks
to be the biggest and the best to date.
I am attaching the programme for the conference, a list of speakers and a
flyer for the conference. [List Mod.'s note: Please access these via the
conference URL above.] I do hope you will be able to attend, and look
forward to welcoming you to London at the end of August. Please pass on
details of the conference to any interested colleagues. We also have just a
few places remaining on our Short Course in International Mental Health
Research (4th - 8th September 2006), the week after the conference, for
more information please visit: www.iop.kcl.ac.uk/international/shortcourse.
All Best Wishes
