Back to Bedlam
10th August 2006
3.00pm
Stop the Torture...End Psychiatric assault!
Psychiatry has a shameful history and deplorably it has carried many
aspects of its past in to the present. Psychiatric treatment is often
more akin to state sanctioned torture than to compassionate and
sensitive care......
Incarceration, physical force, forced drugging, compulsory electric
shock treatment, pain compliance techniques, psychosurgery and brain
washing.........
All demonstrate the defectiveness rather than the effectiveness of
psychiatric treatment.
The Mental Health System is in urgent need of radical reform. We demand
an Immediate End to Psychiatric Assault.
On the 7th August campaigners dressed in pyjamas will push a hospital
bed 50 miles, over three days, from Brighton's Millview Hospital to the
Imperial War Museum (the original site of Bedlam)
The Kiss it! XX petition against psychiatric assault will be presented
to 10 Downing Street on the 10th August.
The petitioners and bed pushers will arrive at Geraldine Mary
Harmsworth Park - London at 3pm on August the 10th. They will be
greeted by a Mad Hatters Tea Party!
Join us to add your support and for afternoon tea and croquet on the lawn.

The Great Escape Bed Push - 7 to 10 August 2006
Press Release
Dressed in pyjamas, a group of campaigners will be pushing a
psychiatric bed from Mill View Psychiatric Hospital in Brighton 50
miles to the original site of 'Bedlam,' the Bethlem asylum in London.
Meeting at Mill View at 10am on Monday 7th of August we will be pursued
by a giant syringe. Like the policies of the government and most
psychiatric hospitals...We are going back to Bedlam!
The Great Escape bed push aims to raise awareness about the poor levels
of choice of treatments and the widespread use of force used in the
psychiatric hospitals. The Great Escape Bed Push Team believe in its
current state psychiatric care often makes people's problems worse and
that the use of unnecessary force is on the increase. 'Forcing
patients to take medication against their will is a spirit- breaking
practice. It can put someone off mental health services for life, as it
breaks down trust between staff and the individual they are supposed to
be taking care of,' Dr Rufus May, Clinical Psychologist and former
patient.
Many of the campaigners have been in-patients who have witnessed and
experienced the use of forced drug treatment. They are joined by nurses
and others concerned by the emphasis on control in psychiatry and the
lack of therapeutic activities. The crazy bed pushers will give out
wanted posters and dodgy pills (sweets) to members of the public and
proclaim 'Psychiatry is off its trolley!' At various points of the
journey the escapees and the public will have to look out for the giant
6 foot syringe squirting water at them. The bed push will end at
Geraldine Harmsworth Park, London at 3pm on 10th of August. The bed
pushers will join a 'Mad hatters Tea Party' (see www.Kissit.org) A
petition will also be presented to 10 Downing Street protesting about
the over use of force in psychiatry (e.g. forced drugging, forced ECT,
psychosurgery and brainwashing). Campaigners would like more meaningful
activities in hospitals, access to alternative therapies, more
accountability about levels of force used in psychiatry and more
alternatives to hospital admission provided (e.g. crisis houses).
