Dear all
Please find below details of an AHRC-funded studentship, commencing October 1st
2006. This is a re-advert in the light of an imminent job move to Exeter. I'd
be really grateful if you could bring this opportunity to the attention of
anyone you feel would be interested/suitable.
thanks!

PhD Studentship: AHRC-funded Project on Spectral Geographies: unsettling place
and self, Department of Geography, School of Geography, Archaeology and Earth
Resources. Supervisor: Dr John Wylie.
Following the award of an AHRC research grant for a project on Spectral
Geographies, the University of Exeter is seeking to appoint a suitably
qualified applicant to a project studentship for three years beginning on 1
October 2006. The aim of the studentship is to enable the appointee to work
towards a PhD in a specified area within the overall scope of the project. The
student’s research will focus upon concepts of place, self and haunting,
primarily in the context of visual imagery (for example art, photography, film
etc). While the direction of the thesis will of course be primarily determined
through the student’s independent research, it is anticipated that a
substantial portion of the thesis would be devoted to a theorisation of the
visual as a haunted and haunting medium. This theorisation could be abetted,
for example, by case studies of particular imaging technologies, and/or
archives of notable ‘haunted’ images.
This project should interest applicants with backgrounds in diverse disciplines
and subject areas, including, for example, cultural and historical geography,
cultural studies and visual studies/visual theory. The successful applicant
will benefit from working within a lively and expanding research environment
within the Department of Geography (see http://www.sogaer.ex.ac.uk/geography/
for details of the department). Applicants should hold a 1st Class or Upper 2nd
Class Honours degree in a relevant discipline. A Master’s degree, either held
or in progress, in a relevant area, would be an advantage. The successful
candidate will work on the project with Dr John Wylie, who is taking up a post
as Senior Lecturer in Geography at Exeter. The award will cover University
tuition fees and provide a maintenance award of approximately £12,300 per year
for three years. The terms and conditions of the award will be those of the
AHRC’s postgraduate studentships. Applicants must therefore have a relevant
connection with the United Kingdom, usually through residence. For further
information, or informal discussion about the position, please contact: Dr John
Wylie (current email [log in to unmask], tel. 0114 222 7959).
Application procedure. Applicants should send a copy of their CV, with the names
and addresses of 2 referees, plus a statement outlining their academic
interests and their reasons for wishing to undertake this research project and
to participate in the project of which it is a part to: Helen Pisarska
([log in to unmask]). The deadline for applications is 11 August 2006.
Interviews will be held in late August or early September 2006.
