Subject: Video-Conferencing: Call for ideas/practical support
Colleagues -
so our idea at last year's Annual RGS-IBG Conference was to use
videoconferencing as a way of allowing people based in the global South and
others who could not attend in person to participate. I volunteered to look
into possibilities. - Now I am asking YOU to offer ideas/actual support to
make it happen.
We do have a speaker who is based in Kampala, Uganda and would like to
present a paper from there.
So far, I have tried several ways of making it work:
The trickiest bit was finding a proper internet/videoconferencing unit in
Kampala- but it looks as though DFID in Kampala would let Claire use their
facilities (as long as they are still not booked that day) for free.
The London end is proving to be the difficulty - after following several
leads, it looked for a long time as though DFID London would let us use
their facilities as well (for free!). This was looking good but then only a
few weeks ago it turned out that their security rules said that we cannot
get our entire group into the building :-(.
My latest (and possibly last) attempt was with the Audio-Visual Unit at
Imperial College, just 5 minutes from the RGS. They have a
video-conferencing room for 10, with a maximum capacity of 25 people, which
we could rent for 130 pounds/hour (standard rate, no discount for the RGS
available...). If we could run it over IP (Internet) there would be no call
charges.
Problem is, with just one speaker so far and a 2-hour session we would be
paying 260 pounds, which is half a flight ticket.
I am now looking for
a) ideas, whether ANYONE KNOWS A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE or has had experiences
with cheaper, low-end solutions for video-conferencing (ones which worked!)
b) SOMEONE TO MOVE THIS FORWARD- I have spent considerable time on this so
far, but am in the process of writing up my PhD and need to focus on that.
Could someone please step forward to take this further?
Please email me by July 20th if this is something you care about and can
contribute to.
Thank You,
Dorothea
