Dear Friends,
The annual conference of the UK Society for Co-operative Studies is
coming up in Cardiff, 8-9 September. This is a chance for academics
interested in studying co-operatives as alternative economic
organisations and in the application co-operative values in a range of
contexts both contemporary and historic, to meet with practitioners
actually running these kinds of organisations on the ground.
This year we follow straight on from the international 'Reclaiming
the Economy' conference at UWIC organised by the Wales Institute for
Research into Co-operatives and our theme is 'Living the Vision:
Co-operative Principles in contemporary practise'.
The key-note address is from Prof. Stephen Yeo (LSE). Other speakers
include Bob Cannell from Suma Wholefoods (a major Worker Co-op
wholesale business); Dr Angela Espinosa (Hull Business School) who has
been working with the Mondragon Co-operatives in the Basque country
applying viable systems modelling to their management; Alan Gill (Chief
Executive of Leeds Co-operative Society and a Director of the
Co-operative Group); Jon Walker from Out of this World (a Consumer
Co-op organic/fairtrade retail business); Dr Gill Seyfang from UEA,
and Adam York from Unicorn Grocery (a Worker Co-operative retail store
in Manchester).
Alan Wilkins (Co-operative Learning and Development Associates) will be
leading a workshop called 'Co-operative Values: an interactive
review' and Dr Linda Shaw from the Co-operative College will be
convening the annual Research Roundtable.
If you book by the end of the month UK SCS members (and those delegates
who have been to 'Reclaiming the Economy' earlier in the week) will pay
£85 inc. Friday night B&B, or £55 for the saturday including lunch.
Other delegates will be charged £99 inc B&B, or ~£69 for the day.

booking form.
Looking forward to seeing some of you in September,
Richard Bickle.
NB As a new subscriber to this list, I will just introduce myself.
Currently completing an Masters at Birmingham University, I am also
heavily involved in the running of a number of Co-operative and Social
Enterprise businesses. This includes being Secretary of the UK Society
for Co-operative Studies, a Director of Co-operatives UK (which
represents the sector nationally), a member of the Education Committee
of the East of England Co-operative Society and a Director and Trustee
of the Greenhouse Environment Centre in Norwich.
Between all this I'm also trying to fit in writing up a dissertation
looking at the long term impact of local economic development policy
through a case study of Co-ops and Social enterprises in the West
Midlands c.1975 to date and wondering if I can develop my ideas into a
PhD...!
