Research Engineer - User Interface Software Engineer
Background
Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless

* mobile telephones containing advanced applications, two-way

and industrial sector customers.
* end-to-end systems for interactive mobile video, as well as
voice and high-rate data solutions for broadband operators
* industrial electronics, computers, data communications and
information processing and handling equipment.
Every year, Motorola devotes around 10% of its turnover to research and
development. In order to bring R&D close to the marketplace, Motorola
has set up research labs throughout the world. Motorola Labs in
Basingstoke comprises a small group of researchers, investigating a
range of advanced technologies. The objective of this research centre
is to develop technologies addressing Motorola's global needs, with
emphasis on the European markets, in co-operation with universities and
standards bodies. Motorola's Basingstoke research centre collaborates
with many universities within and outside Europe, and carries out
multidisciplinary projects within the EC's numerous research frameworks.
Job Summary
Working as part of a research project team, and taking a user centred
approach, the successful applicant will lead the design and development
of user interfaces to produce mock-ups and prototype applications that
are intended for future deployment on mobile and home devices.
Prototypes are used as the basis of ongoing research work and user
testing as well as providing the basis for demonstrating new technology
within the company. Current work centres on personalisation of
multimedia applications across mobile and home centred electronic
devices, with focus on support of user privacy.
The post holder will analyse user requirements and provide software
development and technical solutions within challenging timescales. The
postholder is required to rapidly become familiar with Motorola software
platforms and to represent the potential and constraints of these within
the research work.
Given the wide scope of the work, the candidate may be required to work
on multiple parallel projects, including working with universities and
European organisations researching in the knowledge engineering and/or
AI domain. Travel within Europe and to the US may be required.
Skills
Software skills
* Java, SWING and J2ME are required.
* experience with other GUIs such as Tcl/Tk, Qt, GTK
* experience in application development in mobile and embedded
environments, especially related to UI design and development.
* web and browser based technologies (WML, XHTML)
* Software development practices: configuration management, defect
tracking etc.
Technical skills
* technical knowledge associated with image/ video applications
and application of content/personal metadata
* knowledge and experience of user centred design guidelines
* knowledge and experience of usability/ UI design issues in
development of multimedia applications for mobile environments
General skills
Previous development experience, preferably in the context of a
collaborative project, is required. Some relevant industrial research
experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will be an excellent
communicator, particularly to those inexperienced in the field of user
interface design. A high standard of English is expected.
In addition, the post holder should be highly self-motivated with the
ability to work unsupervised, plan and schedule work, and take
responsibility for delivering results. Cultural sensitivity when working
in a multi-national team and a commitment to ethics are essential.
Qualifications
Good first degree in engineering or computer science with a higher
degree (MSc or PhD) in UI design or HCI.
