On a weekend on-call I'm just that, on-call. If the department requires a senior presence for clinical need (serious trauma, long waits of sick patients) we attend, otherwise we deal with most other issues over the phone. We don't come in for pure 'four hour target' waits, despite what the management might want. Other than the above, the most common reason for attendance is failure of a locum to turn up (like now!) or if someone goes off sick at short notice, there is no locum available to fill the shift and there is a clinical need for us. In that case we get an 'acting down fee' for the work done.
