Well, I've talked to a few senior people that have had problems with
insufficient copyediting and some of the texts that I've seen have
such errors still in them. At least one said that they had to
copyedit the book over themselves. There are also issue with
copyright, which i've heard from three scholars, in that idea-group
will not let the author retain copyright at all, not for archiving,
or anything. Until the ownership situation changes with copyright,
I'm boycotting them. http://culturecat.net/blog?from=10 tells a bit
about their copyright policy.
beyond that, I'm probably biased here, but I don't think that you can
have an open call for a handbook, and many of the calls that i've
seen have been for handbooks. a handbook is supposed to be a
reference work that covers a field or area of study in my mind. it
should invite the authors that are experts to write on their topic,
thus insuring coverage of the field as it is known? right? perhaps,
not. but I'm just not sure what always comes out of idea-group as
handbooks are much more than edited collections . So... if I am
looking for a handbook, i'm expecting authoritative works from core
authors and I find that rarely are these handbooks like that.
Granted some of the books that they publish are pretty excellent too,
but I have this feeling that they are being a bit too expansive in
their rush to build up their e-access program of online reference and
that everything that is being put into this reference is not exactly
great for referencing.
but this is just my opinion, go look for yourself: http://www.idea-
group.com/reference/
