Dear Caire,
My PhD research might be of some help, as it dealt with non-visiting as much as
(if not more than) visiting. My research material is in the process of
being published as a book, but it might be some time until it is
available (October 2007) so the
most straightforward way of accessing the material would be to have a
look at a copy of my PhD thesis. You can obtain a copy by contacting
the Senate House Library at the University of London -

Have a look at their website -

Hecht, Anat (2004) Past, Place & People: An Ethnography of Museum
Consumption, PhD Thesis, University College London.
I know that copies of the thesis have been obtained by other museums
and visitor-related organisations, so this should be "do-able" even
from abroad.
I am sorry I cannot be of more direct help, but I am currently doing
fieldwork in Israel, so my access to my files and indeed to the
University of London is quite
limited at the moment.
I hope this will be of some help to you.
Best wishes,
Anat
