This combination of news and views will give you a flavour of what we
cover on the Platform website.
The European Commission and other bodies have been busy giving their
proposals on security matters. Now depending on your point of view, this
can be seen as a can be a force for good and proof that security
technology is being considered at the highest levels, or as the
longwinded interference of a meddling bureaucracy. Read the following and
decide for yourself.
The European Data Protection Supervisor - the ‘guardian of personal data
protection’ in Europe - has given a forthright response to EU Commission
proposals to improve the interoperability of immigration and police data
between member states. He says that the question of interoperability
isn’t, as the Commission suggests, just a technical matter but it has
legal and political ramifications too. He also casts doubt over the
ability of biometrics to be used as a unique identifier for each piece of

The European Commission has also been concerning itself with RFID.It’s
launched a public debate about the threats and opportunities of what is
billed the ‘RFID revolution’ with sales of RFID tags set to rise tenfold
over the next decade. But the more widespread use of the technology
raises questions about privacy and security - as well as the well-worn

Wimax has been touted as the next-generation wireless technology,
providing long-range wireless connections using microwave technology. But
according to a report from the OECD, a combination of security doubts and
regulatory issues may limit its role as the successor to Wi-Fi and 3G

with such issues, access control company HID has launched an RFID and
Privacy website in association with the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT). The site - launched at the ISC West show in Las Vegas -
