ESRC Joint Collaborative PhD Studentship
Measuring Satisfaction with Public Services: A case study of the Department for Work and Pensions
Nottingham Policy Centre, School of Sociology and Social Policy, University of Nottingham
Department for Work and Pensions
Applications are invited for this three year full-time ESRC Joint Collaborative Studentship, to begin in September 2006. Candidates should have a good Honours degree in sociology, social policy or a related discipline, and have, or expect to have by autumn 2006, a Masters qualification from an ESRC recognised research training course.
The Studentship covers tuition fees at the Home/EU rate, and the student will receive an annual tax-free maintenance award that for 2006/07 will be approximately £14,300 (£2,000 per year above the standard ESRC rate throughout the study).
The focus of the study is customer satisfaction with Department for Work and Pensions services. Central to the concept of customer satisfaction is the notion of expectations, but little is known about how expectations change over time. Longitudinal qualitative research methods will be used to explore whether expectations change over time for Department for Work and Pensions customers and what affect, if any, this has on satisfaction ratings. The study also involves exploring how managers use customer satisfaction data and whether there are methods for measuring satisfaction that can be adapted from the private sector.
Further details are available from Mrs Alison Haigh, Postgraduate Secretary, tel: 0115 951 5354 or email: [log in to unmask], or from
