<snip>
Is Polari a variant of Romany, or is Romany just an ingredient in Polari?
<snip>
As I understand it to be, Parlari (including its name <parlare) derives, to
a considerable extent, from Italian. But it incorporates Rrom elements and
gay and other specialised vocabularies. Hence Kenneth Williams/Hugh Paddick
etc.
And a footnote for Robin: I still haven't remembered the other book I was
thinking of. However, the BL holds a dictionary of Hungarian gypsy dialects
(2000) and a Romani/Punjabi - English dictionary (1981).

(who once attempted to speak to a Romanian gypsy in Italian, with notable
lack of success)
