COUP DE FOUDRE
I feel sorry for them, that
other pair of us who met
in their twenties, so
long ago and otherwhere.
Surely, they met as one
split heart that fused again:
forever together, always happy
thereafter, never looked sideways.
(Can happiness be overstated?
It has its consolations, poor fairytale.)
But we bring divided worlds
to each other, our pasts held
in outstretched hands;
paths that diverged a time ago,
separate and separated histories --
we match and test our scars.
Our own coup de foudre, different and other,
dear heart of my heart, my ground and bone.
