Apparently they're all the rage again... I have, somewhere, the
offending agate from the poem. But I could never bring myself to risk
them in the open game. Which I think is sad, to be so terrified of
loss...

Ahh, marbles ... I remember the contests so well. Little runts like me
could beat the class bully and my big brother ... The various games had
almost 'local' rules: when you played against boys from other schools on
weekends, there were heated disputes about rules and 'fudging', etc. My
sons never seemd to play it much at school but my daughter was a
'dead-eyed dick' at one stage.
What fads do they have these days? I remember the yo-yo craze and
hoola-hoops, the kite craze and other crazes for silly games and sports.
I suppose a lot are involved with computer games now, so all the healthy
outdoor aspect of those fads would have died with them.
