Subject: Re: "The Dark Side of The Force in Relation to Art"
Welcome back, Fred----and what a mighty return! Surely we could subtitle
your excellent dramatic monologue "Revenge of the Chicago Jedi", couldn't
we? This passage, especially, struck me powerfully:
Consider how much freedom
Art has gained since my master and I
saved the republic. Freedom
to carp, to eroticize chaos, gild
neurosis with a sheen of liberty …
you could flood the stars with pornography!
You must admit we never interfere.
Imagine how you’d feel if someone did.
This ending is depressing, that metaphor
unsubtle. I don’t like those colors.
We want a marching tune! … I see
understanding, I see a young hatred
coursing through old or timid bones.
Pursue the feeling; listen to your feelings.

May the Force be with you,

Hi, Judy - glad you liked it. Chicago is full of Jedi. To see the place
merely in terms of "corruption" and "reformers" is to miss something
crucial. -- I have on my desk a black three-inch cube distributed years ago
(with the extra-size burrito-supreme dinner, I believe) by Taco Bell. On
top is the Star Wars logo. Two contiguous sides are transparent. The walls
one sees through them are black with yellow flashes (like those the stars
make when one engages warp drive). At the center is a figure. Seen through
one window is the head of Darth Vader; through the next, that of Yoda.
Looking at it edge on one sees a single head with these two very different
faces. I regard this as the most spiritually profound object ever belched
up by popular culture.
