Things Fall Apart
Museum Conservation in Practice
Awdur: Edited by Caroline Buttler and Mary Davies
Reveals the problems, questions and dilemmas - both practical and ethical -
posed by caring for the material that brings our past to life for us.
Dinosaur footprints, DNA, a prehistoric pot, oil paintings and even a whole
coal mine are among the astonishing range of cases explored here. All this
is brought to us engagingly by the voices of the experts themselves, whose
work, all too often, goes unseen.

16 NEWYDDION - YR ALBAN
Industrial Museums and Ancestral Tourism Mapping Exercise.
Factsheets Available on SMC Website
Museums have been recognised as an important part of the ancestral tourism
product in Scotland and SMC recently worked with the Ancestral Tourism
Initiative (a combined VisitScotland, Scottish Enterprise and Highland and
Islands Enterprise initiative) and a group of Scottish industrial museums
(including a representative from the National Archives of Scotland) on a
project addressing the increasing amounts of genealogy enquiries received by
these sites. The project, funded by the ATI was undertaken by Tony Reid of
SR Consultancy and consisted of a mapping exercise examining the industrial
archives held and suggesting a series of recommendations for the future. A
further outcome was the production of a series of factsheets, prepared for
the participating museums, allowing signposting to relevant archive
resources. These factsheets are now available through our website for other
interested museums - see
www.scottishmuseums.org.uk/news/2006/ati_mapping.asp

Heritage and Sustainable Communities
Peter Roberts illustrated at Heritage Link's Regional Networking Event in
Manchester in January 2006 how heritage and culture can contribute in so
many ways to the creation of sustainable communities providing
'roots' and a sense of place, a focus for engagement and discussion,
offering an identity or a symbol.
