Dear Colleagues
The proposal below for a two-part radio series for the BBC World
Service has
now been shortlisted. I wonder if there is anyone 'out there' who might
be
interested in collaborating with me on adding flesh to these bones - I
need
to prepare a 400 word summary (one phone call/email might suffice). If
accepted I would hope that there would be further collaboration
possible on
the series itself? It's relatively urgent so I would be grateful to
hear
from anyone asap.
Many thanks
Ivor

What's so special about Bird Flu? (2)
Do you remember Ebola fever, necrotizing fasciitis, lassa fever or more
recently new variant CJD, and Sars? These were the deadly diseases
heading
for our shores that supposedly represented a real threat to the
nation's
health. What happened to those threats, that mercifully never
materialised,
and is Bird Flu in the same category? This series will, through
archives and
interviews, recall the 'panics' surrounding these threats and will
talk to
medical experts about why (so far) they have not materialised. We will
also
talk to social scientists about why the media (and presumably its
audience)
is so fascinated by these sorts of stories?
