medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
What do people think of Derek Keene's suggestion of a 'processional
landscape' in the suburbs and countryside around Winchester? This seems to
have been first published in 'Winchester in the Early Middle Ages: An
edition and discussion of the Winton Domesday' (Winchester Studies 1, 1976)
pages 268-270 & fig. 33. The only firm evidence seems to be for the Palm
Sunday procession, whereby the combined communities of the Old and New
Minsters processed to the church of St James in the suburbs outside the West
Gate of Winchester (presumably for the blessing of the palms). I find that
surprising enough in itself, but it seems to be documented in a dispute in
1114, over who did what and when, after the New Minster had moved to Hyde
outside the North Walls. But I would be reluctant to draw any wider
conclusions, or attribute other processions to an early date - the only
wide-ranging processions at Salisbury were the Rogation Day processions.
