medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. June) is the feast day of:
Cyril of Alexandria (d. 444) One of the great champions of
orthodoxy, Cyril became patriarch of Alexandria in 412 (succeeding
his uncle Theophilus). He soon proved to be a rigorist, whom more
modern religious sensibilities might label an intolerant incitor to
violence (or worse). He drove the Jews from Alexandria, closed the
Novatianists' churches, quarreled with the imperial prefect, and his
followers murdered the Neoplatonist philosopher Hypatia on the
street. C. also convened the Council of Ephesus in 431 against the
teaching of Nestorius---before Nestorius' many supporters could get
there. C was declared a doctor of the church in 1882.
Samson of Constantinople (5th cent.) Samson was a priest and
physician of Constantinople who founded a major hospital for the poor
of his city, tending to the inmates personally.
George Mtasmindeli (d. 1066) George "of the Black Mountain" or
George "the Athonite" was given a monastic education, then a good
classical education. He moved around for a while, then settled in a
community on the Black Mountain near Antioch. There he made a major
contribution to Georgian Christianity by translating the Bible and a
great many other religious works.
Ladislas of Hungary (d. 1095) Ladislas became king of the Magyars in
1077. He was a champion of Christianity, and also a major warrior
who spent most of his reign expanding Hungary's borders. Much was
expected of L. in the First Crusade, but he died suddenly before
setting out.L. was canonized in the 1190s.
Benvenuto of Gubbio (blessed) (d. 1232) Benvenuto was a soldier
before becoming a Franciscan lay brother. He was placed in charge of
the lepers, living a comletely exemplary life and praying a lot. B.
was beatified in 1697.
